Sharon Stone To Oprah: Why Shouldn't 50 Be Sexy?

And you thought Christie Brinkley looked good? Sharon Stone is just four years shy of catching up to the 60-year-old supermodel who recently graced People magazine in a swimsuit, and Stone looks every bit the beauty she was at 34 when she blasted into the national consciousness as femme fatale Catherine Tramell in the 1992 movie Basic Instinct.

And Stone tells Oprah Winfrey, who turned 60 in January, that being called a sex symbol at this age (she was 56 on March 10) is totally OK with her.  “If people want to think I’m a sex symbol, it’s, like, yeah! … I mean, like, good for me.”

What I like about Stone’s slightly rambling comments, to air Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on OWN, the Oprah Winfrey Network, is that she doesn’t keep the sex symbol stuff all to herself. “[It’s] good for every other lady of my age to see themselves as a sex symbol,” she says. “Because why shouldn’t we feel a sex symbol in our 50s?” OK, well maybe we can’t all be symbols – but sexy? Heck yeah.

Even if most of we women over 50 don’t have the makeup and fashion squads of movie stars and supermodels, or the personal chefs and trainers who make keeping those bodies so beautiful a lot easier, or the stylists who wrangle us designer dresses – just seeing women of a certain age looking fantastic (like Ellen DeGeneres, Bette Midler and Meryl Streep at the Oscars) is inspiring and good for our collective self-esteem. (Talk about inspiring, Winfrey and Stone spend some Skype time Sunday with Ernestine Shepherd, who at 77, is one of the world’s oldest competitive female bodybuilders.) As our beauty and fashion blogger Lois Joy Johnson said in writing about Brinkley last month: “Race, size and gender are no longer issues in beauty and fashion; it’s time to break down the age barrier too.”
